You can hear them thinking their uninteresting thoughts. Even if these people aren’t particularly interesting, they feel alive. There’s poetry here, and that bleeds directly into the people and this is a film about people, how they think and how they change. Look at the way Taku curls himself into a hotel bathtub when Rikaku uses him as a prop on a harebrained trip to Tokyo, or how a bird perches on the railing of a boat as it bobs in the water. The hyper-real environments have a lot more personality than any of the generic characters who inhabit them - Taku is the insecure protagonist, Yutaka is the steely and mature classmate, and Rikaku is the erratic girl who turns their lives upside down with the wild indifference of a typhoon - but director Tomomi Mochizuki ekes out real signs of life from this overly familiar plot. “Ocean Waves” spreads its paper-thin story across a stodgy 72 minutes, but there’s a warmth to it that prevents the film from ever feeling as two-dimensional as it appears. READ MORE: “Ocean Waves” Sweepstakes: Enter To Win The Studio Ghibli Prize Pack Nothing much really happens, but the film uses its framing device well, and it isn’t afraid to be governed by the irrational impulses of teenage logic. And so the stage is set for a classic love triangle, told in flashback, governed by the emotional stupidity of adolescence, and paced with the unevenness of memory. Alas, Taku’s best friend, Yutaka, met her first. ![]() Her name is Rikaku, and Taku met her when he was growing up in the beachside city of Kōchi. She’s swallowed by the crowd almost as soon he sees her, the girl blinking in and out of sight so fast that our dumbstruck hero can’t tell if he’s actually crossed paths with his teenage crush, or if he’s just been a victim of his own wishful thinking. Nostalgic even in its own time, this sweet little story begins with a young man named Taku standing on a Tokyo train platform and glimpsing a familiar face across the tracks. In both scale and subject, it cleaves closer to the delicate wistfulness of a Haruki Murakami novel - one of his earlier, more earthbound books - than it does the enchanted wistfulness of “My Neighbor Totoro” or the crushing melodrama of “Grave of the Fireflies.” Although it was broadcast before Ghibli had fully solidified its standing as the Disney of the East, a breezy slice-of-life story already seemed like an anomaly for the animation giant. The first Ghibli film that wasn’t directed by either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, “Ocean Waves” is glaringly absent the former’s flair for fantasy or the latter’s gift for minimalist heartbreak. Since then, the sentimental high school drama has existed just outside the Ghibli legend, more of a curiosity than part of the canon, unseen to all but the studio’s most dedicated completists. In spite of those simple aspirations, the project came in late and over budget, eventually airing on local television in 1993 and failing to make much of a splash. The most modest and least celebrated of the films produced by Japan’s peerless Studio Ghibli, “Ocean Waves” was conceived as an opportunity for the company’s younger talent to make something on the cheap. It has been speculated that the music from each concerti was based on the countryside sights in Mantua – where Vivaldi was residing at the time of composition. Vivaldi also took it a step further by unusually including published sonnets that went with each of the concerti (which he may have written himself). The conception of what we can now deduce as an early form of programme music was revolutionary in the Baroque period. Bosgraaf’s version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (of course originally for violin and orchestra) is not a mere transcription for another instrument, but a recreation of a work of startling originality and power: listen to the furioso rendering of the Summer Storm!īosgraaf’s earlier recordings for Brilliant Classics have met withĮnthusiastic acclaim in the international press this new album will strengthen his reputation as one of today’s most fascinating out‐of‐thebox artists. His importance for the emancipation of the recorder (still often considered a stuffy and even childish instrument) is enormous. His concerts are happenings, and offer fascinating combinations of classical and experimental music. As the soloist himself puts it, ‘Listen to Vivaldi with fresh ears and enjoy!’Įrik Bosgraaf is considered one of the most innovative and versatile recorder players of his generation. Bosgraaf’s aim is to make the four legendary concertos sound as if they had been written for the recorder in the first place – and the results are laudable, with the contrasts between the wind instrument and the accompanying strings revealing previously unheard stratifications and details. In some ways it works even better than concertos Vivaldi wrote specifically for the recorder!’ Years ago Bosgraaf performed The Four Seasons with a symphony orchestra for the present album, however, he wanted to approach his ideal as closely as possible using Cordevento, a small baroque ensemble he founded himself, knowing all the musicians through and through. ![]() Such is the standpoint adopted on this recording by Erik Bosgraaf, who has chosen here to adapt the violin part for recorder, explaining how ‘the violin part can be played on the recorder with surprising ease, without many changes. Ngl, I was looking for a place to talk about how CRAZY OP the new “Favour of the Frozen” is. I don't recall the DLC chars enough to comment off the top of my head without the wiki to refresh me, although I do remember a good few runs with Ice Cream Monk. So that means I also disagree with your Barbarian ranking. Cartomancer is the tier OP pick, of course. ![]() It's down to luck if the card effects do anything good, so it's pretty inconsistent.įor completeness, I think Ranger/Alchemist are the tier 2 picks, and Artificer/Troubador are the tier 3 picks. Not much damage out of the gate, but has a lot of utility that lets them bypass enemy defenses, and can achieve early Fire 3 which is an "I win" button nearly all of the time. Bruiser doesn't scale well later, but I think they are top-tier while they are relevant.Īpprentice is strong too. Sure, it is only a physical block, but as you've already pointed out, lots of the early dungeons have enemies that have only a single damage physical attack. Yeah, but isn't that why Artificer is so strong? Tons of defensive and heal options, card draw, and a nuke to keep up with a strong card that you can't counter. I still think relying on blocks for extra damage is sub-optimal and the 1 damage-1 block skill is only a physical block. Arcane is really the only set that doesn't help Bruiser at all. Most other sets add early strong damage so you can hopefully avoid getting stuck playing an Oi card for a single damage. Holy 1, Crush 1, and Armor 1 all benefit from Spikey and are easy to get in starting gear. Plus, given that he starts with an attack/block card in deck, you actually end up doing 2 damage and taking none in some circumstances. Every time Spikey procs, that's putting you ahead in the race. ![]() Keeping your health up is more important, even if the net damage difference is the same, because in a health race, you'll lose in the final round unless you pick up a quick attack. I'd prefer blocking an attack and dealing 1 damage, actually, especially because blocking can also make you avoid any "on hit" effect of an enemy card. Maybe if they had more "on hit" power or a way to recycle in their own cards, or transfer their own own Stupidity cards to the opponent, or some attack/block combos, it would be a stronger set. Their attacks seem on par with having Fire 2, but without getting you closer to Fire 3, the OP Ignite. Measure Trajectory is just Holy 3 and is their only defense. Mid Tier (Meh): Cat Burglar, Shapeshifter, Snowitch, Drunken Sailor, Swashbuckler, Troubador, Mathemagician High Tier (All-around great picks): Bruiser, Mime, Apprentice, Ranger, Barbarian, Alchemist, Ice Cream Monk God Tier (Pretty much a win button): Cartomancer If you want my explanation on any of these, just comment and I’ll get to it- explaining every one of these at once would be a clog. Note these rankings are weighted by tier- for this list the Pirate’s Cove and Ice Cream Headaches Dungeoneers will be Tier 2. ![]() The Super Hornet has a new, 25% larger airframe, larger, rectangular air intakes, more powerful General Electric F414 engines, and an upgraded avionics suite. The new Super Hornet single-seat variant F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F carry over the name and design concept of the original F/A-18 but were extensively redesigned by McDonnell Douglas, and depending on whom you ask, represent an essentially entirely new aircraft. The Marine Corps flew its last F/A-18C mission in 2021. The last original-airframe-size F/A-18C/D aircraft were built in 2000. One of the reasons the F/A-18 Hornet concept has been so successful is that it was significantly redesigned and upgraded into the Super Hornet, which entered service in 1999. What’s the difference between the original F/A-18 Hornet and the Super Hornet? The Navy purchased the YF-17 for use by the Navy and Marines, which after the trials and further development for carrier operations would become the excellent F/A-18 Hornet and later the Super Hornet. After all, you can’t simply glide to a safe landing if your only engine flames out over the Arabian Sea. Experience had taught the Navy that when it comes to emergency procedures at sea, two engines are better than one. General Dynamics was given a military contract from the United States Air Force for full-scale development and production of both single- and two-seat configurations of the F-16.įor various reasons, the Navy often goes its own way where aircraft and equipment are concerned, and was more impressed with the YF-17 and its twin-engine, twin-stabilizer design. In the trials, test pilots reportedly favored the YF-16’s superior maneuverability compared to the YF-17, and in January 1975 the YF-16 was announced as the winner of the ACF competition. These two aircraft were the two obvious standouts in the 1972 LWF competition, which was rolled into a larger-scope Air Combat Fighter (ACF) competition in 1974 in response to NATO allies’ changing requirements. ![]() General Dynamics submitted their single-engine, single-horizontal-stabilizer entry as the YF-16, and Northrop offered their twin-engine, twin-vertical-stabilizer design as the YF-17. Over the next several years, Boyd and his group continued pushing their mantra of “lighter, faster, and more maneuverable,” and the DoD approved military funding for prototyping and trials of 5 designs as part of the Lightweight Fighter (LWF) program. The Fighter Mafia’s persistent arguments and data modeling were compelling enough to secure Department of Defense funding in 1969 to develop and study design concepts based upon the Boyd/Christie energy-maneuverability theory. Major John Boyd and mathematician Thomas Christie, in response to the lumbering, crazy-expensive behemoths passing for fighter aircraft at the time, developed the energy-maneuverability theory to predict or model a combat aircraft’s performance.īy the late 1960s Boyd had gathered a group of engineers and designers known as the “Fighter Mafia,” and the group became somewhat notorious for being very vocal advocates of their theories regarding the need for the military to develop a new generation of light, powerful, highly maneuverable aircraft that could be built more inexpensively and efficiently. In the early 1960s, events were set in motion that would result in the eventual development of two iconic jet fighters, the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F/A-18 Hornet. Origins and early history of the F-18 program Let’s go over the history of the F-18 and learn how this versatile, excellent aircraft has kept itself relevant over four decades. So why do we care? No, not because we’re fans of sweaty, shirtless, beach-football montages (and, well, who isn’t), but because one of the primary stars of the film (in addition to Cruise’s creepily youthful physique and Miles Teller’s creepily pubescent mustache) is the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet that, like Tom Cruise, has been kicking ass and taking names since 1983. The film is Tom Cruise’s biggest movie ever (earning the actor a cool $100 million), and has surpassed Titanic’s earnings to become Paramount’s highest-grossing movie domestically. Whether you consider 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick as a sequel or a reboot of the iconic 1986 joint, there’s no question that the feel-good popcorn movie slash naval aviation recruiting vehicle is objectively a jaw-dropping blockbuster, earning (as of fall 2022) over $1.45 BILLION worldwide. |
